Marcus Bøgh? who dafuq is this guy?
That is probably what people would ask until this evening. Maybe they still do, since noone knew about him until now.
He was a part of the TCD-talent development, and therefore has been trained and treated by the team from the very beginning.
He was signed up as an important allround helper for captain Joppe Marant, the defending champion, to the classical 10 stage tour, Volta ao Porto.
The 20 yearold kiddo ended up hitting top form, even though that was planned only until later on. So 2 riders from our team entered with TF, Joppe and Marcus. Joppe would still be the main captain though.
But Joppe had some terrible time trials, meanwhile Marcus ended up winning the longest of all 3 time trials of the tour. Suddenly he was in the lead, while Marant was more than 1½ minute behind him!
Manager René quickly informed the team that the roles were switched, because Marant wasnt a contender for the GC anymore.
Marcus answered back immediately with his new captainrole, winning the king stage, and 2 stages in a row.
The battle for GC came down to Marcus Bøgh and Italian Alfonso Melazzo from our very good friends over at the Dutch team of peddelen.
Marcus held the GC-lead until 7th stage, where Melazzo ended up taking almost a minute over Marcus, which meant, that the final time trial of the tour would decide the winner. The YC was already claimed by Marcus Bøgh, with Joppe Marant on the 2nd place.
The last time trial ended succesfully for our team, with Marcus ending 6th. That meant that the lead in the GC now was back, and couldnt be caught again.
Marcus Bøgh will ride into Porto not many hours from now on, claiming both the GC and the YC of this prestigeful tour.
Other noticeable things is that the team got 4 guys in top 20 with Marant (6th), Bauwens (12th), and Oprinchuk (16th).
This will be the 5th GC the team will win, 3rd at the Volta, and the 5th YC too. Also 3 of those comes from this great tour.
